Chapter 11

Ashley and I left the restaurant a few minutes later. I headed home, my gut a turmoil of emotions after our chat.

Was she right about there being something weird about Gary? Yeah, of course she was. I ignored it because I was just excited to have found somebody who knew my parents, and who liked them. It was like finding a piece of my own past, and I wanted to cling to it with everything I had. But in reality, there was something strange about a wizard leaving the community. Paranormals had a tendency to stick together.

And sure, witches and wizards weren’t as close as shifters were. There was a coven in town, but it’s not like we all met regularly and did things like try to prevent someone in the community from taking up a life of crime. Witches and wizards were much more like regular American people in that sense. But to completely isolate oneself from the community? That was weird. I couldn’t deny that. I wished Gary trusted me enough to tell me why he had done it. Or was the answer something I didn’t want to know?

When I was about two blocks from home, my phone pinged, indicating that I’d received a text. It was a message from Logan. Do you want to go see Tyler tomorrow morning? I’m off from six to eleven in the morning. I can come pick you up, and we can go straight to his place from there.

I sent my answer immediately. Sounds good. Thanks. I’ll see you then.

I entered the house, and Jay immediately hounded me for leftover pizza. Luckily for him, I’d slipped an appropriately cat-sized sliver into a napkin and put it in my bag, and he happily munched away at it while eyeing me closely.

“Everything okay with you?” he asked.

“Yeah, it’s fine. I just had… a hard conversation with Ashley. But it had to be done. I just wish I had some answers about my parents, you know? I want to know who killed them. More than anything. And it feels like every time I take a step closer toward knowing the answer, I get dragged back.”

Jay nodded. “I can understand that. But you’re trying to do things from the shadows, and that doesn’t suit you. You’re the kind of witch who needs to be in charge. The kind of witch who runs headfirst into the burning building, without worrying about what you’re going to find. That’s why this is so strange to you, and uncomfortable. This time, you’re doing things subtly. You’re trying to find the answers without exposing yourself, and it’s a balancing act you’re not used to, and you’re not comfortable with.”

“Wow. That is… amazingly insightful.”

Jay sniffed, as if I’d just insulted him. Which, I supposed I had. “I am one of the most intelligent cats in the world. I can come up with insightful commentary when needed. Your life just doesn’t usually require such analysis.”

“Ouch. I guess I deserved that.”

“You most certainly did.
